Give to support the hundreds of thousands of people affected by devastating Cyclone Idai to walk #TheNextMile toward restoring and rebuilding their lives, their livelihoods and their communities.
In mid-March, Cyclone Idai ravaged parts of Mozambique, Malawi and Zimbabwe in what could be the worst humanitarian crisis ever to hit Southern Africa.
Millions of people were in the direct path of the catastrophic cyclone. Widespread flooding has left whole villages still submerged and some areas remain completely cut off by road.
Floods and winds destroyed businesses, schools, clinics, churches, crops, roads and communications infrastructure.
As water have systems become contaminated, there is increasing risk of an outbreak of waterborne diseases like cholera, which if left untreated, can be fatal.
In response, Higherlife Foundation is continuing to mobilize teams and resources to support the communities affected by this devastating storm causing loss of both lives and livelihoods.
Driven by young people within the organisation committed to see more lives saved and livelihoods rebuilt, today we are launching a new campaign - Pledge Idai: #TheNextMile.
The model of the campaign is simple: GIVE & SHARE.
1. GIVE: Every dollar donated will go towards efforts on the ground in Malawi, Mozambique & Zimbabwe. We will also provide matching funds to leverage your donations to help as many people and communities as soon as possible.
2. SHARE: Share your giving story of how you have given towards those affected. We want to tell a powerful story that Africans and friends of Africa can stand together in response to the crisis. Share this link, too, to others you know will want to take part.
Together with Delta Philanthropies, Higherlife Foundation and partners on the ground in all three countries, #TheNextMile response strategy will seek to:
#Recover; #Restore; #Rebuild; and #Ensure #Readiness to ensure our communities are better prepared in the future.
We urgently need your support in donating to Pledge Idai: #TheNextMile Appeal.
Even a small donation will help us to provide and distribute essential supplies and relief items across Zimbabwe to support the children and families who have been affected, as well as begin the rebuilding process. Most urgent needs include:
• Blankets, tarpaulin and rope to keep families who have lost their homes safe.
• Buckets, jerry cans and water purification tablets so families can access clean, safe drinking water.
• Hygiene kits to help keep families clean and stop the spread of deadly diseases.
CYCLONE IDAI IN NUMBERS
-Almost 1,000 people have lost their lives but searches are still underway. Some were washed out to sea.
- Hundreds of thousands of people are displaced and homeless.
- 900,000 children have been orphaned, separated and/or displaced.
-2.5 million people are affected.
Contributions will go beyond providing for immediate needs such as water and shelter. The goal is to enable affected groups to gain the strength and self-confidence to make a fresh start, rebuild their homes, go back to work, return to the classroom and reclaim their rightful role in society.
Delta Philanthropies will match your donations.
