Volunteer Trip to Dominican

This summer Claire and I will be spending 6 weeks working with the Mariposa DR foundation. The goal of the foundation is to end generational poverty by focusing on empowering and educating Dominican and Hatian girls.
Over the summer the school provides not only academic support but also experience based learning and opportunites for the girls to engage in sports. This year they are starting a cycling program! Claire and I will be working daily with the girls in this program. We will be sharing our love of cycling with them while teaching them safty and basic bike maintenace. We will also be supporting their swim program as needed.
To many of us riding a bike and swimming are afterthoughts. To the girls in these programs they are pathways to strength, freedom and a sense of pride they will be able to take with them as they fight to change not only their situation, but that of their family and beyond.
Claire and I have decided to start this page to help cover our costs for this trip. We will have travel expenses, meals, car rental and other basic living expenses. We will obviously be trying to live as inexpensively as possible while also thinking about safety. I have found housing for FREE!
The breakdown:
airfare-$650 x 3 (Jeff will be coming once either to help us get settled or to visit us mid trip)
car rental- $1200 (It is not safe for us to trust cabs or take motor taxis)
food- $350 (I'm budgeting $50 dollars a week for groceries and toiletries and we will be there 7 weeks total)
If you would like to help us cover our costs we would really appreciate it. We hope to also have a few lemonade stands or cookie sales at the train station!
