I am Sharon Shaffer and I am kicking Huntington's disease in the ass. HD is a degenerative neurological disorder that is slowly taking away my physical abilities as well as cognitive functioning. Despite the changes in my brain and body I am committed to raising as much awareness for HD as possible. In June of this year, my husband and 3 friends rode their bikes in the Race Across America cycling event that spanned 3,000 miles from Oceanside, Ca and ended in Annapolis, Md. A fearless group of family and friends served as their crew to help them get safely across the finish line. Along the way they were able to teach more people about the devil of all diseases, HD. During the the race we were blessed with the opportunity to be followed by media crew with the hopes of turning the footage into a documentary. That hope has turned into reality and a full length documentary depicting the bike race and the struggles of our family living with HD now exists.
We believe this film will help spread awareness about HD and inspire others faced with adversity. We are so close to being able to release the movie but still need funds to finish it professionally. So in honor of the documentary I will be running the Carlsbad half marathon Januaray 17th. Despite HD I am determined to do anything I can to see this project completed and make this the last generation with HD.
