I have struggled with whether or not to do this, as asking for help can be extremely difficult for anyone, but, you know what they say about tough times.
In the early morning hours of 8/1/23, my brother’s German Shepherd, Zeus, suddenly became very ill. Brad rushed him to the nearest emergency vet more than an hour away in Orchard Park, where the situation quickly became dire. Though the staff initially brushed off Zeus’ symptoms, they eventually diagnosed him with "gastric dilatation-volvulus," more commonly known as “bloat,” a life-threatening condition where the animal’s stomach fills with air and begins to flip. Most dogs usually die within hours of this happening.
Given the extent of Zeus’ case, the more conservative treatment (a procedure using a tube) was ineffective, and Brad was faced with a decision between two remaining options: immediate emergency surgery or euthanasia. There was no question in authorizing them to do whatever they could to save our family member's life. Anyone who knows Brad knows how attached he is to Zeus, whom he inherited from our late grandmother, Sylvia. And anyone that knew Sylvia knows that Zeus was her world, and she entrusted him in Brad’s care, a responsibility he has not taken lightly.
In surgery, they discovered Zeus’ stomach had twisted a complete 180 degrees, and the procedure undoubtedly saved his life. We are grateful that the Orchard Park veterinary staff skillfully prevented another tragic loss for our family. However, they are running a business, and anyone that has ever had to deal with a situation like this knows how money can quickly take priority over people (or pets). The full payment was due immediately, and the staff made clear that they offer no financing options.
Luckily, Zeus' surgery was a success, he had a follow-up visit today, and he is making progress toward his recovery, which is what is most important. However, the unexpected expense was a large one that has already taken a financial toll. If anyone is able to help contribute to Zeus’ vet bill, it would mean the world to us. Every cent or “share” helps. Thank you for taking the time to read this!
