I really struggled with the decision to do this. I don't like asking for help, I'm stubborn, and private.
February of 2019, I had the most beautiful baby. The day after I had him, he passed away. I'm sure you can imagine the earth shattering pain that caused. I'll be honest and say that I neglected to take proper care of myself after giving birth because I was severely depressed. A few months postpartum, I began to feel an abnormality in my breast and didn't think much of it. I had severe postpartum depression and didn't really care what happened to my body until I felt that. I didn't really think it would be anything serious, I even tweeted about it in jest. It turned out to be a cancerous tumor. Needless to say, 2019 wasn't nice to me at all.
I had surgery that September. I had another surgery in March, right before the entire world stopped. I knew I'd need more treatment but I never saw a pandemic coming. I tucked away enough savings to cover my treatment and incidentals but the pandemic halted the projects I had lined up for the year. I'm an artist and it's how I take care of myself. Many of my opportunities are on-site and require me to be on location and in close proximity to people. As we all know, none of that is safe right now, especially for people with compromised immune systems like myself. Cancer and COVID-19 have completely ruined my life as I know it. I had to live off my savings which cut into my ability to pay for my treatment.
I'm currently undergoing chemotherapy to try and save my own life. Because I'm under 55, I have a really good chance of living a nice long life if I can get through this part of it.
I live alone and have no family in DC so caring for myself comes with some additional complications. What I'm asking for will help pay for the remainder of my treatment and incidental costs like food and bills. My backup plan was to try and crank out as much work as possible to handle everything on my own but I just don't have the energy. I'm exhausted, in pain all the time, and experiencing neurological issues that affect my ability to complete tasks.
If you can help, I appreciate it.
