Providing wellness for Black expecting moms

What is The Expecting Collective? 

This is an initiative working towards closing the wellness gap of black maternal-fetal health by providing wellness resources through crowdfunded subscription boxes curated to support expecting Black moms in RVA. We want to launch this initiative by partnering with Birth in Color RVA , a grassroots organization in Richmond, VA that is working towards linking maternal justice to reproductive justice. 


Who is going to benefit?

The Expecting Collective will impact Black women in RVA, who are three times more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes than White women. These pregnancy-related complications usually stem from chronic stress and mental health trauma that are caused due to deliberate discrimination, lack of empathy and support.


Why should you donate?

This transgenerational trauma can be reduced through mindfulness and self-care practices. The Expecting Collective addresses 4/6 ways recommended to reduce risks of pregnancy-related complications among Black moms i.e, Practicing self-care, minimizing stress, getting social support, finding & managing trauma. 


What will we be doing with these funds?

Birth in Color RVA is hosting a community baby shower for around 200 new and expecting Black moms in RVA during Black Maternal Health Week. We want to sponsor wellness boxes for expecting Black moms that will cost around ~$35 per box. 

Our costs will include: 

- Sourcing of products (teas, lubricants, body butter, supplements, face masks, essential oils, Open When letters) 

- Packaging & branding 

- Printing

Birth In Color RVA is a non-profit organization designed by a community of practitioners engaged in the promotion and practice of culturally centered reproductive health support in and around Richmond, VA. Aligned through membership and purpose, we offer women, families, and communities the place and space to be supported and affirmed through information and choice. The network directly provides pregnancy, birth, and postpartum support to expecting parents and families, opportunities for skill development for fellow practitioners, community engagement, and advocacy initiatives to address relevant needs.
