Give vulnerable children an education

Hi, my name is Tania Nortje Petersson and I am presently a board member at Africa A plus Schools an NGO based in the Eastern Cape, South Africa. South African by birth but now living in Sweden with my husband, I became aware of the plight of children in our impoverished communities who did not have the benefits of the type of education children in Sweden experience.

The quality of early childhood education in rural communities is highly problematic and contextually challenged by lack of water, food, payment for teachers and their upskilling. This results in teachers doing little more than a 'babysitting' job during the key years of early development. With my heightened awareness of the need to provide quality early childhood education, I took the decision to actively participate in change and joined the Board for Africa A  plus schools. This step has to date, afforded me the privilege of seeing change happen whilst being part of that change. It has affirmed for me, that sharing my skills together with working collaboratively with a passionate team of ECD specialists, can actively drive change in our poorest communities.

I, therefore, urge you to join me in making a difference and supporting the work on the ground of Africa A plus Schools. Take the time to read all about us and I guarantee you will be excited about making your contribution to this valuable initiative.

Africa A+ Schools is an early childhood non-profit organisation that enables preschools to deliver a quality early future-based education that prepares today’s children to be tomorrow’s citizens.

Our apartheid history has left a legacy of disempowerment and poor education. We need your help in giving impoverished young children a good start so that they have a future in South Africa. At Africa A+ Schools we help schools deliver a quality early future-based education by:
• nurturing an entrepreneurial mind-set, problem-solving, critical thinking, collaboration, communication and creativity in teachers and children
• facilitating joyful teaching and learning experiences using an asset-based approach that values indigenous knowledge and skills
• offering professional development and sustained mentoring that supports implementation, national curricula outcomes, and accredited training initiatives
• training a team of community facilitators for three years so that they can support the A+ Schools when we are no longer there

We started as a pilot project in 2015 in collaboration with Oklahoma A+ Schools in the USA, Standard Bank in South Africa, the Western Cape Department of Economic Development, and the Craft + Design Institute.

The pilot project was successfully completed in 2018. In 2019 Africa A+ Schools was registered as a non-profit organisation.

You can give vulnerable children a good start in life by donating to the Africa A+ Schools fund. These funds will go towards supporting in the following ways:

• Acquisition of early childhood education materials
• Professional development events e.g. a workshop or conference
• Seed funding for our day to day operations
