Zangara Family - Help Lucas fight DBA

Donation protected
My husband Nick and I welcomed our first baby, Lucas, on November  5th, 2020.  He has been such a joy and light in our life.  We love him unconditionally.  Lucas is such a sweet baby. He loves to be held and cuddled.  He is beginning to hold his head up more and enjoys warm baths and hearing mommy sing.  His favorite songs are "You Are my Sunshine" and "Hush Little Baby".  Lucas is the love of our life.

Lucas was born with a rare genetic disease called Diamond Blackfan Anemia, or DBA for short.  DBA is so rare that only about 1 in 7 million people have DBA.  DBA effects the bone marrow and its ability to make healthy red blood cells.  DBA can effect different parts of the body and is responsible for Lucas being born with a limb abnormality on his right arm.  People with DBA can live a long and happy life but will need extensive medical treatment throughout their life span.  Lucas will be transfusion dependent unless other treatment options work for him.  When he is two Lucas can start steroid treatment.  If this is successful he will likely stay on steroids and alternate to transfusions when his body needs a break from steroid treatment.  If Lucas's body does not respond to steroid treatment, Lucas can remain transfusion dependent but will need medical support to monitor for iron overload in his vital organs such as the heart, liver, and pancreas.  A final treatment for Lucas would be a bone marrow transplant.

As stated before Lucas will need medical support throughout his life to fight DBA.  The donations made will help cover the costs of medical bills for transfusions, surgeries, and medication.  Donations will also help to cover the costs of travel expenses for specialists we need to see outside of the state of South Dakota.  Likewise, Nick and I as his parents will need to take time off work to help care for our son and his medical needs.  Donations would also help cover the costs of taking time away from work.

Nick and I are both teachers and love children and making a difference in the lives of children.  The support given through donations would mean the world to us and would help our own child, Lucas, get the medical support he needs.  This will help us financially and take some of the stress away as we navigate what it means to be new parents to a child with special needs.  If you are able, please consider donating to help my family and my sweet Lucas.  Anything will help.  If you cannot donate in the form of money, please consider donating blood when you can as Lucas's life depends on this.  We will always be grateful for good thoughts and prayers.

Lucas is strong.  He is a fighter.  He deserves to feel nothing but happiness and love. We are forever grateful God blessed us with his sweet soul and chose us to be his parents.  We are forever grateful for the friends and family that have supported us along the way.

If you have the time, please learn about DBA at dbafoundation.org.

God is good all of the time!
