Zane Cash has epilepsy, he had his first seizure at 3 months old. For the first couple years of his life he seized as many as 60 times a night. He was in and out of the hospital the first year of his life and was sent flight for life at age 1 due to a seizure that would not stop, called status eplepticus.
Zane's mom, Kim, and the doctors tried everything to get his seizures under control. At age 3 Zane underwent his first brain surgery, removing a small area from his parietal region, everyone thought he was "cured"... however before long the seizures returned and Zane started to deteriorate from all of the seizure activity and medication.
In 2008, Zane and his family came to Children's Hospital of Wisconsin. At this point Zane was only awake for 2-3 hours a day. Children's changed his life, Zane had his right frontal lobe removed, approximately 25% of his brain in an effort to gain seizure control and reduce the amount of anti-seizure medication. The surgery did help reduce the amount and frequency of seizures but left him with some additional disabilities. As a result of the surgery, Zane is now paralyzed on the left side of his body and has cerebral palsy.
Fast forward 9 years, Zane is now almost 14-- although, developmentally, he is between 3 and 4 and will remain at this point developmentally. We have still not gained complete control of his seizure activity and new seizure sources have developed. The doctors now want to perform a hemispherectomy, which is basically removing the right side of Zane's brain in it's entirety. Zane's seizures originate from the right side of the brain and at present the damage is contained to the right side. Over time if we do not gain seizure control the seizures wil spread and begin to affect the left side as well. Zane's seizure type also make him more susceptible to a condition called SUDEP, Sudden Unexplained Death in Epilepsy. The future without surgery is bleak as his function will deteriorate with continued seizure activity and the risk of SUDEP grows.
When Zane had his frontal lobectomy he was inpatient for 37 days and had to learn to walk all over again once he regained his strength. Zane's mom stays with him throughout his hospital stay and as a single parent she faces added expenses and loss of income for an extended period of time. Kim and our family are with Zane 24/7 and after his surgery we'll need help. Any donation would be a contribution to this beautiful family's care and stability. Some important costs that will be covered by the funds include:
-Household expenses and bills
-A ramp to enter the house
-Fence for the yard/safety
-Caretaking costs
-Dinosaur puzzles
