Hi, my name is Zane
I am an environmentalist and I have hope.
Nowadays, the state of the environment can instill a feeling of hopelessness. This is central to my motivation - I still have hope we can do better and be better. I believe wholeheartedly it is not too late. The first thought we have when thinking of the environment should not be one of negativity and tragedy. I believe it can be durable, robust and keep the majesty of its beauty. My faith and hope are not misguided or irrational. While my thoughts may seem wishful, especially in times like these, there is a logic behind my beliefs. I am currently an undergraduate student at the University of Waterloo studying for a BSc honors in the School of Environment, Resource and Sustainability (SERS). I have noticed there is no lack of incredible research being done in the field of ecology and the natural sciences. Research is exposing an abundant amount of astounding information. Organizations such as Operation Wallacea are among those that are conducting some of this research - spearheading findings whilst having a true and trusted presence since 1995. Inspired by the great ecologist Alfred Russel Wallace, high-quality research runs in Operation Wallacea's bloodline.
My main concern lies in the gap of understanding the issues of our changing environment and the actions we take in our daily lives. By going to Mexico to experience the research aspects of the natural world and its ecosystems, both land and ocean, I will gain more knowledge and understanding allowing me to develop a sharpened message. I will spread this message and new knowledge. I will succeed in filling the gap of misunderstanding. Immersing myself in this field of study will not only help me grow but also provide me with more knowledge, by which I can inspire change in those around me.
While my message is one of hope and faith it is not a reason to act in a lackadaisical or sluggish manner. The state of the environment is calling for help. Time to act has never been more urgent. To ensure the change I create is warranted, I must become more well-versed in my field of knowledge regarding environmental research and sustainability. By funding this trip, you will help me grow and add fuel to the flame of change I will create.
