My husband and I started volunteering with animal rescues four years ago, which led us to fostering, adopting, and rescuing countless animals, especially if they are special needs. My husband works overtime when it’s available, and I picked up a second job to help support our passion for helping animals. This last year has not been a good one, with thousands of dollars going towards several minor surgeries and losing three pets. More recently, we adopted a young blind dog, Zinnia, from a shelter. Two weeks later, we had to rush her to the ER to find out a fungal infection was taking over her little body. They said it was probably due to the environment that she was born into, and nothing could be done for her.

A few days after losing Zinnia, our four-year-old Pointer Mix, Zane, hurt his leg while playing. X-rays show fractures and torn ligaments and will require orthopedic surgery. As of right now, we have one quote, and from start to finish, it will be over $7,000. What has already been done (x-rays, meds, cast, etc.) was $925, and we are scheduled to do that again in less than two weeks (another $925) before scheduling the actual surgery, which will cost $5,301. We’ve had several people contact us wanting to help, and as much as I hate to ask, we really don’t have much of a choice. We have reached out to other vets for second opinions and quotes for surgery and to VA Tech’s Veterinary School as well. We are also weighing the pros and cons of orthopedic surgery with hardware versus amputation and what’s best for Zane now and in the future as he gets older. I will update this as we get responses from other Veterinary Clinics.
