Laura’s Nursing placement to Zambia

Hello everyone!

I am now a second year student nurse and have been given an incredible opportunity to travel to Zambia, Africa for three weeks in September 2019 and work in a hospital in the town of Lusaka.

During my time here in Zambia, I will be given the opportunity to gain professional experiences of working in an environment that is basic at best. I am intending to spend time in paediatrics, gynaecology and maternity care. I will undoubtedly come across malnutrition, HIV, Glaucoma among other conditions and diseases that I may never come across again in my professional career here in the UK.

I will have some free time while in Zambia to experience some of what this wonderful country has to offer and I intend to visit Victoria Falls (Devils pool) and would love to go on a safari.

I have never travelled outside of Europe and certainly never been so far from my loved ones. This experience will be tough. I am very much looking forward to seeing such a different side to nursing as well as the many challenges this will bring.

This trip in total could cost me in the region of £3000 and I, for the main part will be funding myself, however a little support could go a very long way.
Any money I do not spend, I will donate to a charity in Zambia.
