Zambia Deaf Youth Leadership Summit

Building Deaf Leaders In Zambia

Hello, my name is Francis Phiri and I am a Deaf educator in the San Francisco Bay Area.  I was born and raised in Zambia and as a child I became Deaf from a serious illness.  I struggled to get an education in Zambia where there are very limited resources for the Deaf.  Thanks to the good Lord and many who supported me, I was able to come to America for college and now I can help others in the Deaf community here and in my home country.

I recently formed an organization, Give Back to Community Zambia  (GBCZ), with the goal to help Deaf children in Zambia get a better education.  During our visit to Zambia in 2017, we learned that there is a definite shortage of Deaf Community leaders and very little coordination and cooperation between various Deaf Education projects and programs in the country.

To address this need, GBCZ plans to host a four-day National Deaf Leadership Summit in Kitwe, Zambia later this year. We will be inviting two Deaf program leaders from each of the 10 Provinces in Zambia to attend. This Leadership Summit will offer intensive leadership training and collaboration workshop opportunities for Zambia's Deaf Education leaders provided by GBCZ and other international organizations who will be included in the Summit.

Years ago, I would not have been able to believe the quality of life I live right now here in San Francisco, California. I always ask myself "How did this happen?". The answer is simple: It is because of my tenacity, always believing that I will eventually thrive no matter what obstacles I face in life.  Also it is the fortune I have had in having so many supportive people who have believed in me.

With all that, I cannot imagine any other way to express my gratitude than giving back to my community, and to those who are less fortunate than I am today. I will start this effort by hosting this youth Leadership Summit and I invite you to join me by becoming a supporter.

Please join me and IDEAL (International Deaf Education, Advocacy and Leadership) by donating.  Any donation, large or small will help fund the travel, accommodations and conference expenses for young Deaf leaders in Zambia to attend this important gathering where they will work together to build stringer educational programs for Deaf children throughout the country.   As a supporter you will receive thank you letters from participants and photos of the event.

Thank you for your generosity and please share this campaign on your social media so that we can raise the funds we need to impact the lives fo many Deaf children in Zambia.
