Mission Trip is November 2-12, 2017.
Think Africa and the mind’s eye conjures-up visions elephants and other wild animals spread over wide open vistas. And when you hear the name Dr. Livingston, you think about 19th century English explorers. Welcome to Zambia! Located in southeast Africa, this former British colony has one of the most prolific wild animal populations in Africa. The world’s largest sheet of falling water, Victoria Falls, is also located here.
Our work in Zambia is to assist in establishing programs that are intended to teach skills and job provide opportunities for women and girls in the Victoria Falls region. We’re looking at ways in which we can assist to address the need to provide skills and job training for women who are seeking an alternative to prostitution as a means to earn a living.
During this trip, we’ll employ group and individualized training techniques to help women and girls vision and set goals. The objective of this training is to help participants to identify and see themselves as the “narrators” of their own life story. Assuming the role of narrator helps to create a vision for our own being and to assume ownership of our activities and goals. As part of this training we’ll focuses on four major principles: know who you are, know you matter, live with intention, and be a part of something bigger than yourself.
As a volunteer in Zambia I will work with a team to achieve the following:
– Meet and work with the diocese in Livingstone to complement their existing programs.
– Facilitate within a community the concept of owning your life story and goals.
– To provide a forum where women can begin to learn job skills.
