Zainel's school cricket tour

My name is Zainel Bin Busu and I am an aboriginal Gija boy born and raised in Kununurra I am a student at Great Southern Grammar, Albany, Western Australia I was awarded a 5 year Yalari Scholarship in 2013 as a year 7 student and this is my 4th year at Great Southern Grammar.

Since attending Great Southern Grammar I really enjoyed being part of the boarding house and the local community, learning new subjects, having different experiences away from home, meeting new people and making friends along the way. I am now a Year 11 student hoping for a career in sport. I am strongly involved and very committed to the sporting life in the community and at school I enjoy playing a range of sports I also study sport related subjects such as Physical Education Studies, Outdoor Education and Sport Coaching which is a Cert II course I’m currently studying at TAFE 1 day a week. I am definitely a keen sportsman, and I have represented my house in the swimming, cross country events, and athletics at school I represent my school in the local basketball competition and I am a member of the Great Southern Grammar Country Week Australian Rules Football team.

 I like other subjects including English and Media studies. One subject is called Student Work Placement where one day a week, I spend 1 day working in a sport related workplace such as the W.A Department of Sport and Recreation for the AFL Commission. The W.A Football Commission work placement I get to go to other schools around the Great Southern region and take football workshops and clinics with groups from Years 2-10. I really enjoy working here because it’s something I am passionate about. I have enjoyed my placement with a primary school teacher, teaching sport skills to younger children.  After having several interviews I was recently awarded a School Based Traineeship with the City of Albany. I will be spending one day a week at the City of Albany working on communications and public information. With a traineeship, a work placement and selection in the school cricket tour to Dubai, I have overcome my fears from shyness and home sickness as I have been away from my family for 4 years now, and I find I can now step out of my comfort zone and take on new challenges. This is a once in a life time opportunity for me and I would like the chance to follow my dreams on becoming the next AFL footballer or joining the Australian cricket team. My advice to all children no matter what background you come from stay at school and get an education because education is the key to a bigger and brighter future.
