Healthcare in Peru 2016

Donation protected

Hello everyone! My name is Cristina Lane and I am currently a senior nursing (BSN) student at Washington State University.

After a long application process, I have been accepted by Washington State University College of Nursing's trip to Peru! Myself and a team of nursing students, pharmacy students and faculty will have the privilege to provide community health care to those in poverty in the Amazon region of Peru May 14, 2016 through June 3, 2016. This experience will allow me to participate in global health care and allow me to apply assessment skills in planning and implementing health care to individuals and communities. I will be in program arranged housing including dormitory style housing, hostels, hotels, and tents.

While participating in this experience I will have the opportunity to work in/visit places such as Lima, Iquitos, the cathedral of Iquitos, the Amazon River, the sacred Valley of the Inca, the Machu Picchu ruins, and stay overnight in the Amazon Rain forest.

I plan to use this experience to enhance my career by seeking a new perspective on culture, communication and how I fit into the healthcare field as a nurse. I have always found other cultures fascinating and feel that exploration of other cultures is extremely beneficial to my learning. I hope that displacing myself from an environment where I am comfortable will allow me to reflect on myself, and force me to adapt to new situations, cultures and settings. I hope to further build on my ability to be compassionate, understand others, and work as a team during this experience. I am confident in my abilities and my self as a student. I know that after completing my goals I will grow personally and professionally, and aid toward the great nurse I will become in the very near future.

Going on this trip to Peru with my peers has been a dream of mine ever since I began nursing school with WSU. In order to make this trip happen I am asking for donations, applying for scholarships, and writing letters to some of my hometown organizations.
