LOOKING FOR A CHRISTMAS MIRACLE for my friend Helena who came to Utah as a refugee. Helena has overcome so many trials in her life and is working her hardest to continue establishing a good life here in Utah for her and her 2 boys.
In 2016, 18-year old Helena left a Kenyan Refugee Camp, where she had fled from war-torn South Sudan, to make a better life for her and her 5 year old son, a pregnancy that was a result of a violent act in the refugee camp. Helena was completely on her own in a new country trying to get by with a language she barely knew. Trying to navigate this life has proved very difficult as a single mom. She thought she found love and ended up the victim of domestic abuse and financial exploitation...with another baby to support.
Helena has faced these challenges head on. She has recently completed the CNA program, passed the drivers permit test, and works many long hours to pay her rent.
This is where the Christmas miracle comes in. She travels on the bus 1+ hours each way to work each day...to a job that is only 6 miles from her apartment. The length of time she has to navigate bus transfers takes away from time with her boys and adds to daycare costs. If she had a car, it would take her 11 minutes to get to and from work and would free up the time a single mom desperately needs with her family. It will also make travel safer for her once she's working long shifts as a CNA. However, a car is not in the budget as it takes all she has each pay check to make ends meet. This would be a life-changing gift for Helena!
