Save Our Home

I urgently need help to prevent losing our home. I have recently learned that the home in which my wife and I have lived for over 20 years has been sold for unpaid real estate taxes. If the back taxes are not paid by November 6, 2018, we can be forced out of the home. That would really be catastrophic! Don't know what I would do then.
I know if YOU were in this situation, you too would be so very grateful for any help you can get. I also know that with massive exposure, this campaign goal CAN be met, and our home WILL be saved.

My name is David Meszaros. I am 70 years old, and a Viet Nam era US Army Veteran. My wife is Jamie Meszaros, and she is 61 years old, and is severely mentally and physically disabled.

To explain how this situation came about I will try to keep this brief, yet succinct. Jamie was initially disabled by being hit by a bus in Chicago on October 7, 1987. She was in a coma for 3 1/2 months. She went through several years of rehabilitation and relearned to speak, read, write, and do basic math, and walk with a walker. Although disabled, she was able to function independently.

Her husband divorced her in 1991. Jamie was sent to live with her mother. Her mother lived in Springfield, IL. In 1995, when Jamie's mother knew she was dying of cancer, she placed the home in trust for Jamie, naming Jamie's brother as trustee. Jamie was brought to the Chicago area to live with her brother and his family.

Jamie and I met in May of 1996. We were married in 1997. Her brother remained the trustee for the home in Springfield, and of the estate she had resulting from a settlement from the bus accident. I was not privy to the details of the trust. The real estate taxes and any major expenses to the house were paid from the trust. Of course it was my responsibility to pay all utilities and normal upkeep of the home and family. I received no correspondence from the county concerning the real estate taxes. The county sent everything to the trustee.

In 2010, Jamie had another major accident. She fell, hit her head on a wall, and suffered extensive bleeding in her skull, crushing in the entire right side of her brain. She lost ALL of her abilities, and now needs help with every aspect of her daily functioning. I am Jamie's Guardian of Her Person by court order.

In 2014, Jamie's brother, through the court, gave up being trustee, and
transferred the trustee position to one of Jamie's daughters. I was not told the funds from the settlement had run out in 2014 or 2015. I did not become aware of that fact until late July when I received notice from Sangamon County of the sale of the property for the 2014 taxes. I did not become fully aware of the extent of the debt until my phone conversation on October 9, 2018 with an agent of the company that purchased the taxes. She advised me that once the taxes from one year are sold, the county gives the company that bought the taxes the right to purchase subsequent years' taxes. She told me that the taxes for 2015, 2016, and 2017 and various fees have also been added to the debt!

A breakdown of taxes and fees due from 2014 thru now:

- 2014 taxes paid in 2015, plus filing fees                   2064.71

- 2015 taxes paid in 2016, plus interest                       5606.70

- 2016 taxes paid in 2017, plus interest                       5124.82

- 2017 taxes paid in 2018, plus interest                       4686.23

The total amount of taxes and fees as of October 18th is $18,406.61.

Please contribute what you can; and share this campaign with as many people as you can. I appreciate you taking the time to understand and sincerely appreciate your help!
