Meet Mike Goodsell, my brother.

Many of you already know him from growing up in this community, having formed a friendship with him through school, or through his two sons Nathan & Lucas’s many years on the baseball fields, served in the military with him, served with him in his combat deployment to Iraq, as the former Chaplin at the local VFW, through the many business and civic organizations he’s been a part of, or through the many relationships and bonds that he has formed at our church, Hope Christian Church, and through his commitment to mentoring our youth in their faith.

Several years ago Mike was diagnosed with Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD). This progressive disease is hereditary in our family, stemming from our fathers’ side. Many of our family[MF1]  members have lost their battles with it, all at early ages, and took our father at the age of 49 years young. The kidneys create many reoccurring cysts, which eventually rupture causing great pain, blood in the urine, and ultimately causing the kidneys to become extremely enlarged and ultimately fail.

At the end of last year, Mike learned that the disease had progressed to the point that it was time to begin the process of getting onto the National Donor list in search of a kidney donor. Since it can take years for a cadaver donor to become available, that is not only a match but it also be Mike’s “turn”, it was also recommended that he try to find a live donor & God laid it upon the hearts of many, to embrace the process of becoming a potential match. Mike & Lisa are overwhelmed with the amount of friends who were willing to donate their kidney to him.

Just 2 weeks ago, Mike was told that he was officially on the transplant recipient list, and also just about a week later was notified that the insurance had officially approved the transplant when his turn came.

But God !!!!!!!  God had this all orchestrated in His perfect time! One week ago, on March 18, 2018…. Mike and Lisa made their way to church as they typically did each Sunday. But this was no typical Sunday! Mike received a phone call telling him they had an EXACT match and could he come to the hospital now !!!!  Our church family prayed over him before he left, and Mike received his new kidney on Monday March 19, 2018.  To God be the Glory and blessings and peace to the family of the donor.

Mike has been out of work for several months and also will have a long road to recover (he has another pending surgery to remove the original kidneys) many post op appointments that are typical with a transplant patient, Lisa only having a small portion of paid time off to care for him, rising medical expenses stemming from the transplant surgery itself, the upcoming 2nd surgery, and the high cost of his rejection meds, that he will have to take for the rest of his life, I have felt it placed upon my heart to reach out to our many family and friends for help.

No amount is ever too small and every donation makes a difference for them, as they begin the recovery process.
