UCMC Fund Drive for Funds

Donation protected
This fund drive is for seed money to set up two separate funds for the UC Mountaineering Club through the University of Cincinnati Foundation.

The first fund would be for the Steve Must Memorial  Scholarship (SMMS). This was set up in 1997, monies were raised, and several scholarships were sporadically rewarded. Although it was always the intention, an official connection to the UC Foundation was never made.

To start a fund through the Foundation, there must be an initial contribution of $5000.

We also need money to run the club, so a second $5000 is needed.

The UCMC as it exists today does what it always does. It offers a wondering, wandering soul a place to belong and to find a little bit of themselves by engaging in all sorts of outdoor adventures. This is enabled by a kick-ass gear selection at a price affordable to college students ($20 a semester) and by a partial subsidy for big trips.

The subsidy is necessary because self-insuring UC has dictated that all trips by student organizations outside the tri-state region of Ohio-Indiana-Kentucky must use commercial transportation; i.e., we have to rent a car or a van.

We don't offer climbing or caving classes as we did in the past, so that revenue stream is not there. A source of revenue besides the gear fee is money we get by providing volunteers for big running races like the Flying Pig Marathon or the Bockfest 5K.

The financial support we currently get from UC is strictly for transportation costs and is limited to $5000/year. Those of you who have been a part of the UCMC in the past may understand that such support ebbs and flows and has all sorts of red tape. I would like to have a buffer to this uncertainty, an additional revenue stream from donations.

There is about $2000 left in a private account at the CINCO credit union that Robert Sexton set up for the scholarship fund. I would like to raise $9000 in order to start these two separate UCMC funds. The money raised here through GoFundMe is deposited directly into that account.

When at least $5000 exists in the CINCO account, I will write a check to the UC Foundation to officially start the SMMS fund. When the second $5000 has been deposited, I will write another check to the UC Foundation to start The UCMC Fund.
