"Siskiyou Violins and the Woes of a New Violin Teacher" ( written by Chloe Skye)

It was mid march, you know, the time you've been pent up inside with nothing to do at that time and no snow all winter long. You were done with it and no matter how much you fought with your siblings, you couldn't be entertained. It was at this time that my violin teacher who I had worked with every summer since sixth grade and now most of the school year. She was going out of town for three months and we had discussed the need of getting a new violin teacher in her absence.

Before I go into further detail, I should give you more background. Siskiyou Violins is a prestigious all violin group that travels and is connected with world wide competitions and is very well known in the music world. My violin teacher thought I should join the group, so when she left, I began to practice with Faina Poldonaya, the women who started and runs the advanced group. It was the difference between night and day. My old violin teacher and my new violin teachers were opposites. Ms. Poldonaya was used to training and molding a standard of perfection, while Ms. Potter was more gentile and soft spoken. After one month of hard lessons where I had to relearn everything I knew, I was accepted into the Siskiyou Violins group which is going to Carnegie Hall in April.

This has shaped who I am because there were many times when I didn't want to go to my lesson, or I didn't want to go to another grueling rehearsal, but I did. I learned to preserve and to think forward to the outcome and to simply take the hard work and the sometimes disheartening times that come with it. I learned that in life I will have to stop and start over again, and again. Being the newbie isn't the most fun thing in the world, in fact at times it can be downright terrible to be new, and yet I have gotten this far and have become a far better violinist for it.
