Dear Reader,
We are students from Indian Hill High School and St. Georges High School in Cincinnati, OH and Middletown, RI respectively. This letter doesn’t need to amplify the horrors of COVID-19. As the virus gradually breached all corners of the world, I’m sure all people have made modifications to their daily life. Many have transferred work or school indoors in order to socially isolate. However, many of us are lucky enough to have a home or a profession that allows us to stay home.
Unfortunately, America’s severe shortage of masks has risked the lives of many medical workers and potentially rescuable patients. BEST’s long-time member and Veterans Association doctor Lina Mandybur told us that doctors and nurses toil through the patients in the emergency room without masks. However, it is heart-warming to see a national movement of the public uniting towards the fight against COVID-19. From curtain cloths to bedsheets, the public has strained every nerve to sew simple masks for our medical workers.
As we all know, public efforts are necessary to defeat the pandemic. Therefore, first and foremost, we ask everyone to take precautionary measures to stay home, wash hands, and remain sanitized. This is not only for our own protection but for the health and safety of those who are fighting for your health and safety.
Lastly, we use this letter to urge you to support our efforts in providing basic protection gear for our medical workers. As paramount resources have been prioritized to outbreak cities such as NYC or LA, states such as Ohio and Rhode Islandare fighting the virus with inadequate artillery. As the home states of BEST’s (Better Education for Stronger Teeth) board members, we initiated this fundraiser to purchase masks from China to support the medical workers of our local communities. So far, we have donated nearly 3,000 masks (all certified and approved) to 5 hospitals in Cincinnati and Rhode Island. All donors who declare their names will be put on BEST’s website (www.bestforteeth.org) and will receive a thank you letter. BEST’s donations are transparent and we will also publish all certificates from the hospitals that we donated to. Thank you so much for your empathy and contribution towards our fight against the pandemic! Stay safe!
