Help Transport 4 Dogs from Yulin

Please help us transport four dogs rescued from the illegal meat trade in Yulin, China.

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING TO DO

On June 19th, 2017, a truck carrying hundreds of sick and injured dogs bound for the Yulin Dog Meat Festival was intercepted by activists and volunteers. After being taken in by rescue groups, many – if not all – dogs needed intensive care for the deadly disease parvo, infections, amputations, and/or other horrific conditions.

Animal Action Guangzhou is one of these rescue groups that continues to work around the clock to provide treatment for the animals pulled from the truck.  This is an expensive, time-consuming, and emotionally-taxing task that these wonderful volunteers continue to do every day.

We’re looking to bring four of their dogs – healthy and recovered – into the United States, partnering with New Jersey-based nonprofit, It's A Ruff Life Rescue to place them with loving families so Animal Action Guangzhou can focus their efforts on the animals who need their attention most.

China’s export laws allow only one dog shipped per passport, meaning the most cost-efficient way to rescue the four animals would be to have four volunteers fly back to the United States with them.  However, some of our rescue dogs are considered "oversized" and require a different, more challenging type of transportation.

Our goal is to raise the funds needed to save these dogs and provide them with loving homes they deserve, help our rescue friends in China, and continue to provide awareness to the meat trade overseas.  

These dogs have gone through a horrific ordeal, and their battle isn’t over yet.  Will you help us?

FAQs

Why these dogs? There are a number of dogs in the United States needing attention.
While this is true, there are animal rights laws in place here in the United States. There are thousands of wonderful animal rescues pulling dogs from kill shelters across the country with volunteers and donors working tirelessly to ensure the animals’ safety. I’ve worked with a number of animal rescues, fostering over ten dogs in two years before adopting my own. Having been horrified by the merciless slaughters in China and donating to rescue organizations acting to stop the festival, I’ve found myself always wanting to do more. I’ve been given the opportunity to help these animals in a very short period of time, and I need to take it. I will continue to foster locally afterwards.

What is the Yulin Lychee and Dog Meat Festival?
To celebrate the start of summer, a small village in Yulin, China hosts the annual Yulin Lychee and Dog Meat Festival where independent butchers sell dog meat to consumers (amongst other products).  Dog meat is thought to provide health benefits, although there is no scientific research backing this claim.  It is also thought that these benefits are increased when adrenaline is pulsing through the animals’ bodies.  For this reason, the dogs are horrendously tortured before their imminent slaughter, often in front of the buyer.  GRAPHIC CONTENT: Dogs are physically beaten, stabbed, strangled, hung, skinned, boiled and/or torched – all while still alive and fully conscious.

This practice is barbaric. Although illegal, the Chinese government does not interfere with the festival and recently requested each vendor booth show only two carcasses at a time as a means to help regulate the killings. This was not enforced nor was it adhered to.

Where do these dogs come from?
Many dogs are bred in slaughterhouses throughout the country. Others are pets stolen from their families. Some are strays snatched from the streets.  Due to the extremely poor conditions, almost all dogs are fighting off deadly diseases such as parvo and various types of infections. 

How do they get to the festival?
The dogs are crammed into small metal cages and stacked like pallets on trucks driven for days on end without food, water, and for the very unfortunate ones on the bottom of the stack, oxygen.  Many dogs arrive at the location dead by either disease, suffocation, starvation, or dehydration.

Where did the four dogs you're trying to rescue come from?
The four dogs we’re looking to bring into the United States were pulled from a meat truck headed for Yulin. On June 19th, 2017, a number of activists and volunteers intercepted the truck and negotiated the surrender of the animals, of which there were hundreds. Animal Action Guangzhou, based in Guangzhou, China, took in many of these animals, starting a volunteer organization from scratch in order to provide a sanctuary and treatment for the dogs’ recovery.  These four dogs are currently at clinics or foster homes supported by this amazing rescue.

What happens when the dogs come to the United States?
We’re partnering with the nonprofit animal rescue, It’s a Ruff Life Rescue based in New Jersey to place these animals into foster homes until they can be placed in their forever homes with loving families. After the dogs are brought into the United States, they will be transported to foster homes within the rescue’s network of volunteers and eventually become available for adoption.

Where does my donation go?
Your donation will help fund the safe transportation of four dogs from Guangzhou, China into the United States.  Exporting the animals from China is a complex process and the most cost-efficient way to move the animals requires flight volunteers to physically fly out of China with only one dog per passport.  Your donation will cover the following costs:

- Pet airline transportation fees and cargo shipment costs for four dogs

- Required vaccines, health documentation, and export requirements for the dogs

- Airfare for volunteers flying into and out of China (if required)... Note: I will be covering my own travel expenses out of pocket.

In the rare event that we surpass the requested donation amount, all funds will be provided to Animal Action Guangzhou to allow them to continue to care for the animals in their clinics.

If we do not make the required amount for transportation, the raised donations will be split amongst Animal Action Guangzhou and It’s A Ruff Life Rescue.  I’m hoping we can meet our goal, but either way, the animals will benefit from all raised funds.
