In Canada, Spring is a transition to renewal, rejuvenation, and hope for the warm months ahead. Just above the equator, Ghana begins its descent into slightly cooler weather at this time of year. This means seeds will be planted and ready to harvest in August.
Not only is April a month of agricultural preparation, but it also has religious significance, as Muslims and Christians will be observing Ramadan and Easter. Join YSYF as we deliver food hampers to underserved communities in the Shai-Osudoku District of Ghana.
Why are we fundraising?
Food insecurity and malnutrition are ongoing challenges in Shai-Osudoku and have been exacerbated by the pandemic. The cost of food has nearly doubled as families face steep inflation and economic challenges. Many households in Shai-Osudoku can only afford to eat a single meal a day, consisting mainly of carbohydrates (kenkey, garri, or rice), which lacks many of the essential nutrients we need.
As an Organization that works to improve the health and economic outcomes of women in Ghana, we are also concerned with how food insecurity is an issue that disproportionately impacts women, and how single-mother led households tend to be affected more than their male counterparts. This imbalance persists in spite of the fact that women make up half of the global agricultural labour force according to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization.
Where does your donation go?
In May 2022, we will be distributing food hampers to families facing food insecurity in the Shai-Osudoku, a rural community in Ghana.
$40 provides a hamper consisting of enough vegetables, canned mackerel, rice, oil, tomatoes, and spices to feed a household of 10 people. This cost includes hamper purchasing, packing, transport, and distribution within the community. Our goal is to raise $4,400, which would ensure that 110 households enjoy a hot meal! Your donation will support community members in Shai-Osudoku by putting food on the table for a day.
