Who we are:
We (Johanna Bandler, Isaac Robinson, and Jack Burnham) are three high schoolers with an interest in politics. We've launched a project with the goal of encouraging young people to participate in political discussion.
The issue at hand:
For millions of young Americans, the current polarized political climate is both frightening and overwhelming. While many feel passionate about current events, most are unsure as to how to act. What's more, young people as a whole feel unheard.
Over the last decade, millennial voters have consistently turned out in smaller numbers than older voters; in 2012, only 46% of eligible millennials voted in the presidential election, whereas over 60% of members of the Gen X, Boomer, and Greatest generations participated.
Our solution:
We intend to help change this dynamic. We know that young people can make a difference. Forty-six million millennials are eligible to vote compared with thirty-nine million seniors. Looking towards the 2018 midterm elections, it is imperative that this group be engaged, informed, and inspired to act. In our opinions, if young people are involved in political related activities and discussion beginning now, they will be much more likely to vote in the future.
Here's how it works: We've built a website through which we will highlight a "topic of the week." We will provide our visitors with a summary, a relevant video/article, and three people closely connected to this issue that can be contacted. We will post relevant information concerning these people, including who they are, how they are related to the issue, and their contact information. Then, readers can take this information to write letters to politicians. They can thank someone for his or her participation and work on the topic, encourage someone to speak up, or express concern. No outside research is necessary (although it's always recommended), and after reading what we've provided, it shouldn't take young Americans more than a few minutes to write a letter!
Our goal is to keep the entire process simple and easy. This is where we differ from other movements with similar goals; we will not clutter inboxes, and because we will only post one subject a week, we expect that high schoolers will be more likely to engage. We believe that we will see more results if we remain clear, concise, and do not overwhelm our subscribers.
Why we need your help:
We're almost all set to go, but we need funding for our website! This includes monthly payments to hold our domain as well as hosting fees. We also need money to promote our site and spread the word! Any help would be much appreciated in getting us off the ground!
