In October of 2018, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) released a report that said globally, we have 12 years to reduce our emissions and keep global temperatures below 1.5 °C, to avoid complete climate catastrophe. Less than a year later in June of 2019, the Canadian federal government approved the Trans Mountain expansion project.
That’s where we come in.
We are Youth Stop TMX. We are Rebecca Wolf Gage(13), Nina Tran(18), Olivier Adkin Kaya(18), and Lena Andres(17). We are four teenagers taking the federal government to court on the grounds that the decision to buy the pipeline directly violates our rights, and the rights of other young Canadians, under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. These violations include the right to Life, Liberty and Security of the Person, and the right to Equality, by refusing to consider the more extreme climate change impacts of the pipeline on youth.
By donating to our page, you are not only benefiting us four young people and our lawyers, but you will also be benefiting yourself. This pipeline is a fossil fuel investment in a time where we need to be divesting from the fossil fuel based economy we are in now. By donating to this page, you are sending us more than money - you are sending us your support. You are showing that you believe in this fight as much as we do. You are showing that you believe youth have the right to a future, even if the Canadian government is trying to block our voices.
Your generous donation will be put towards various things such as; hourly legal fees for our lawyers, court fees, travel and accommodation, printing, expert fees, postage, and courier fees. Our incredibly dedicated lawyers are working at a discounted rate and volunteered their extremely valuable time in the stages to draft and send our letter to Cabinet. We now need your help to get us the rest of the way.
