Youth Fighting Hunger During COVID-19

Donation protected
I learned at a young age that some of my classmates suffered from hunger and food insecurity. Since that time, I've been dedicated to finding a solution to alleviate hunger in my community. Over the past 8 years, I've grown and donated over 19,000 lbs of fresh produce to my community. COVID-19 has increased the need for food resources for many families across the country. Hunger and food insecurity is growing at an alarming rate. Given the current situation, I am working even harder to produce even more food to help our community.

Since schools closed on March 13th, I've donated over 100 lbs of homegrown vegetables to Austin ISD families impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. I immediately began planting new beds and growing seeds to ensure I'd be able to increase production and feed even more people. I've incorporated vertical gardening to optimize space and have begun adding grow bags. With food banks focusing on providing emergency non-perishable food items, we continue to provide fresh food to families in need. We are accepting requests for donations and are providing free produce as it becomes available.

Missing teaching other students at school gardens or community booths, we have begun sharing seeds so students can start their own gardens in the yard or on their balcony. We received a very generous seed donation at the same time that COVID-19 hit our community and decided it would be best served by sharing with fellow students. As a master gardener intern, I am offering Zoom sessions for teachers and/or students wanting to learn about growing their own food.

Funds will be used immediately to address the growing need for food as Austin families are finding themselves out of work, without access to school meals or are struggling as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Your donation will help us expand our gardens to grow even more food as well as to provide volunteers with PPE to help ensure safe delivery fresh produce to families who need it as well as supplies needed to continue to grow more food for families.  Any funds we receive that exceed our goals will go toward preparing and provide hot, healthy meals to go for those in need of a meal along.

Your donation of any amount will help provide a meal to a child and their family in the Austin community. Just $5 can feed a family of 4 for a week with the amount of vegetables we'd be able to grow for them. Thank you for supporting our project to help grow a healthy end to hunger in our community!
