We have a class-mate in need of our assistance as he successfully transitions out of treatment and into employment and independent living.

In December 2017, our classmate David Roberts reached out in desperation after a long and debilitating struggle with addiction and mental health challenges.  He showed his most vulnerable self to everyone by reaching out for help through the USMA98 group on Facebook. When David reached out, many of us wanted to help but for many of us, the challenge of finding the right resources or knowing how to coordinate access to resources made offering meaningful help a very difficult task.  Fortunately, I happen to work in an organization that specializes in helping people in situations such as these and with David’s commitment and candor, we were able to quickly get him to a safe place where he could enter an intensive long term rehabilitation program with the American Addiction Centers in Las Vegas, NV. There he was able to receive treatment for his mental health and his addiction. David has been sober since December 11th 2017.  He has been doing exceptionally well and has reported to be a better, happier self. He and I have been in touch on a regular basis and I have been in the loop on his treatment and progress with his case worker.

Now that David is nearing the end of his intensive recovery program, there is another opportunity for us to lend assistance. In the next 2 weeks he will be transitioning to Sober Living which provides him with housing at a discounted rate of $900/month.  With this transition, David will go from full-time devotion to his rehabilitative therapy to full-time job hunting.  Since David’s time is currently 100% focused on rehab, he has been unable to devote much time to the job hunt.  He is currently looking for work in the Vegas area.  The Sober Living Housing opportunity represents a great resource for David to have a support network and limited expenses as he finds work.  Where we can help is with the first few months of expenses to allow David the flexibility to be secure in his housing while he finds a job that will sustain him moving forward.  If we can raise $3000, it would ensure that David's housing situation is secured while he continues to focus on finding work that will keep him continuously engaged.

It took tremendous courage for David to reach out for our help and I was awed at the outpouring from concerned classmates scrambling to find a way to come to his aid.  David has demonstrated his commitment and I believe he is firmly on the path to a happier, healthier life. I really hope that we can come together as a class and help his continued success by easing this difficult transition from treatment to independent living.
