The lack of electricity in my home village, Kpantarigo, Ghana is having a huge negative impact on the educational outcome of the school kids in the community. Most of them cannot study and do their homework at night, except for a few who have access to kerosene lamps and flashlights. In this technological world, you would be surprised that kids from my community have never used computers due to a lack of electricity to power them. As a community native with firsthand experience of this problem, I am collaborating with a team of students at the University of Washington to provide solar electricity to my village. We‘ve been able to initially install our first solar panel at the local community school thanks in part to the Marcy Migdal Fund for Educational Equality, in order to have computer lessons. This fundraiser seeks to purchase an additional solar panel to expand and increase electricity access to the entire school, with the eventual goal of expanding to individual households. Additionally, this project will be part of a larger effort to understand how to most effectively and impactfully provide energy access to communities like my home village. Through your donations together we can help uplift the educational outcome of kids in Kpantarigo, Ghana, West Africa.
I wanted to thank you all for your generous donations and prospective donors toward our community school solar project. I am glad to inform you that we met our initial goal of $2500! This money will help buy additional panels and batteries, which will enable us to expand the project to the elementary school, providing a lightbulb and socket in every classroom.
For the next step, we plan to buy a modem and internet bundles for the elementary and middle-school students to have access to online resources. In order for this plan to materialize, we will need to secure some additional funds to pay for internet services. In addition, we would like to create a small fund that we can use to purchase the internet bundles regularly and for maintenance of the project.
Thank you again for supporting this worthy cause. None of these would not have been possible without your donations. I can’t wait to be in Ghana this summer and promise to send you photos of the smiling students by the end of August.
About the Fundraiser—Francis Abugbilla
Francis is a PhD Candidate in International Studies at the University of Washington Henry M. Jackson School of international Studies. He researches conflict resolution, peace-building, and reconciliation. While in elementary school he used kerosene lamps for studies and thinks that kids in his home village should have access to clean energy.
Disbursement plan
Funds raised will be sent to my U. S. bank account and I will transfer 100% of the amount to Nocheski Solar—partner of Victon Energy in Ghana using a feeless application called Wave. I will be in Ghana in the summer to supervise the project.
