My name is Malik Cotton, I am wanting to start a nonprofit where the main focus is beginning to bridge the gap between different sections all throughout our city.
In the wake of the numerous civil and human rights injustices taking place in our country, and here at home in Omaha. I've found myself viscerally called to action. We live in a state that wields the slogan "Nebraska...the good life" yet many of [us] have never tasted it.
The economic, racial, and educational divide between North and West Omaha has fostered to two vary different livelihoods. You want to live in a nice neighborhood? Go out West. You want to provide your child the education they deserve? Go out West. You simply want to live the "good life"? Go out West. But, I see the beauty and untapped potential living here in North Omaha.
My goal is to start a nonprofit with aims of closing the opportunities gaps, providing mental health services for youth and families, and addressing food disparities in our communities. [We] are the change we seek, and the time for that change is now.
