Beards for Breakfasts

Donation protected
Watch as a man and his beard are forever parted in an effort to raise funds for a breakky for Brisbane's homeless.

On the 2011 Census night there were over 4,000 homeless people in Brisbane, ranging from those who were sleeping rough to those in crisis shelters and boarding houses. Homelessness continues to be a big issue in inner city Brisbane.

Community Plus+ Boarders Breakfast is a free community service provided to people living in local boarding houses, experiencing homelessness or otherwise disadvantaged, by offering a much-needed free hot breakfast to up to 60 of our areas most disadvantaged residents per week.

The breakfasts are held at 6:30am on Thursday mornings at West End Community House.

Alex Skinner, who is a Community Development worker at West End Community Plus says:

“We have a great crew of volunteers who are out here before dawn in the winter to make these breakfasts happen”

“We are fortunate to receive donations of food from organisations such as Second Bite and OzHarvest, but we still need to raise around $5000 a year to get the basics- like sausages and eggs”

Gary* a breakfast attendee says:

“It really helps me get through the winter, knowing that I can come and have a hot brekkie. I feel really at home here.”

Community Plus+ have recently been offered one innovative way to help with fundraising to continue the much needed project into 2016, by hosting a charity beard-shaving event.

Local resident and event industry identity Craig Mathews, has volunteered to have his mighty beard shaved, to raise donations for the project, having experienced being homeless in his own past.

The event will be held at The Rumpus Room in West End, on 14 September 2015. The night is also home to the soulful and talented band Captain Dreamboat, who will be filling the night with their signature vibe. As it happens to be a Monday night, the traditional Rumpus Room hospitality prices will be in effect, and West Ends best kebabs are right next door.

The Beards for Breakfast charity event is kindly supported by Scenestr Magazine, Little Rascal Records and many more

Cash donations can be made on the night.

Community Plus+ is a registered not-for-profit Organization, trading as West End Family Care Services Inc.

All donations are tax deductible.

Community Plus+ is a community development organisation in Brisbane’s innersouth. We work across three centres – Annerley Community Hub, West End Community House and Yeronga Community Centre – to strengthen communities in our local area.
