My name is Alia Saleebaan. I'm originally from Somalia, grew up in Sweden and arrived in the United States 6 years ago. I graduated from Wellesley High School in Massachusetts in 2019. My freshman year of college was at Mass Bay Community College. I did really well academically during my freshman year of college, Then I applied to Howard University as a transfer student. I was accepted for Fall 2020. Attending Howard University is a dream come true. In order to take this life changing opportunity, I need help to close the financial aid gap. I need your donations to fill the gap that remains after all of the scholarship aid.
I have had an internship at a nonprofit organization called Global Smiles. The reason I choose this nonprofit internship is that they provided comprehensive cleft care for patients born with cleft lip and palate in underserved communities throughout the world.While attending college I had a part- time job with an ophthalmologist at Gallery eye care. I have a huge passion for helping people or just making a change in someones life, I was recently admitted to the ACLU National Advocacy Institute in Washington on a full scholarship, sadly is going to take place virtually.
Success is triumphing over hardships -- willing yourself over anything and everything to achieve the best for yourself and your family. With this scholarship, I will use it to continue focusing on my studies in Biology, instead of worrying about making money and sending more back home. It will be an investment into myself for my family.
I will need additional $23,580 to make this dream come true. I’m the first in my family to attend college. I’ve also been living here without any immediate family. My mom lives in Africa and I haven’t seen her in 12 years. Currently I’m living with elderly extended family who are not in a financial position to assist.
