Cyrus Chan's Legacy Scholarship

Dear Friends and Colleagues,
As you may or may not know, one of our own surgery residents has been battling stage IV colon cancer for the past year. Dr. Cyrus Chan was diagnosed with colon cancer in his fourth year of General Surgery Residency at the young age of 37. Since that time, he has been battling his cancer diagnosis through multiple bouts of chemotherapy, radiation and surgery, all while maintaining optimism, hope and sincerity.
Dr. Chan was born in the small town of Moraga, California. He attended Loyola Marymount University. He worked as a Teacher’s Assistant and an EMT during college. After graduation, his passion for education continued to grow and he chose to teach high school Chemistry and Biology. He then decided to pursue a career in medicine at Trinity College Dublin in Ireland. Dr. Chan began his General Surgery Residency in 2009 at the University of Toledo where he excelled as a physician, mentor, educator and friend. He also completed a fellowship in Surgical Critical Care in 2014 at The Ohio State University.
Dr. Chan is well known throughout the residency and medical school for his infectious smile, incredible energy, and dedicated work ethic. He has always believed in demonstrating leadership through example and he continues to inspire others with his unwavering positive attitude in the face of life’s challenges. One of Cyrus’s most distinguishing qualities is his devotion toward education. He has been the recipient of the Resident Teacher Award at the University of Toledo on multiple occasions and was chosen to receive the Gold Foundation Humanism and Excellence in Teaching Award.
As Dr. Chan has been battling through stage IV colon cancer, his dedication to surgery remains unrelenting. He attended surgery grand rounds, quality improvement conferences and social events in the department. Dr. Chan had hoped to return to work in July to complete his residency and pursue a fellowship in vascular surgery. Unfortunately his cancer has progressed recently and these goals may not be attainable.
Dr. Chan’s passion for teaching and his constant effort to lift up those around him is the measure to which we will hold ourselves accountable and spend our careers trying to achieve. In hopes of establishing Cyrus’s legacy as a permanent part of UTMC, we are putting together a scholarship in his name, 'The Dr. Cyrus Chan Resident Teacher Award.’ Dr. Chan has requested that this award go to a resident who has continually shown devotion to student and resident teaching throughout the year.
