Rich's Road to Recovery

Donation protected
On the night of July 15, while visiting friends in the Phoenix, Arizona area, Rich suffered a debilitating traumatic brain injury and brain bleed that appears to have left him with paralysis issues on his left side, and yet to be determined cognitive ramifications. He had emergency surgery that evening for his best chance of survival. Rich is in the trauma intensive care unit at Chandler Regional Medical Center in Chandler, Arizona, where he is expected to remain until the middle of August. After that, he is expected to be transported by air ambulance to a brain injury rehabilitation facility in either Atlanta or Pensacola, Florida, where he will be closer to family.

Rich’s father, Bayne Woodson, has been by his side since the day after the surgery. Family members, including Rich’s niece, cousins, and sister, have flown to Phoenix to provide support to both Rich and Bayne, while Rich’s mom, Ann, kept the home fires burning. As of today, Rich is showing modest improvement, and seems to be a bit more aware of his surroundings. He is now breathing on his own. He has responded to simple commands (squeeze my hand, move your fingers), opened his eyes, and seems to recognize Bayne and his sister, Saucey.

According to Rich’s amazing medical team at Chandler Regional, Rich faces a very long and expensive road to an uncertain recovery. It will take approximately 8 months of intense, residential medical care and rehabilitation before we even know the extent of his brain and physical injuries and the long term prognosis for recovery. Rich is not married and has no children, so his emotional support and medical decisions will fall on his parents and sister. Costs for his medical care, and other expenses such as medical transport and closing out his apartment in Hawaii and shipping his belongings to family for storage, will easily reach over $1 million. Many of you have asked how you can help Rich and the family outside of your continuing prayers and calls of support. With your financial assistance, Rich and his family can focus on his recovery and rehab.
