The Yellow Days Festival 2019

We believe that all people deserve more than just food, shelter and medicine. As humans, we have an innate need to share culture and company with others. Since the beginning of the refugee crisis, displaced people have been living in isolation and despair, trapped between home and their a safe new place to settle. The situation left many feeling hopeless. So we decided to do what we do best and organise an event that celebrates our common humanity and our beautiful differences.

The Yellow Days Festival 2017 was a humanitarian event for the soul. Over 4 days, hundreds of refugees, Greek locals and contributors from over 30 countries came together on the island of Leros to share food, music, dance, and art-making. The fully volunteer-run festival raised over €2000 for the local blood bank as well as  clothing for Leros’ refugee community, and in the process created lasting networks of support. It showed that there is more that unites us than divides us.

The next Yellow Days Festival comes to Athens this September. This year, it will be bigger and even more ambitious.

Our aims are:

– connect people from all backgrounds through the arts, forums and cultural exchange
– create a fully sustainable environment as a living example of an eco-conscious future
– generate more lasting impact than ever by nurturing mental health networks and other long-term support initiatives

And that’s where you can help.

With three months to go, we need another £10,000 to make this goal a reality.

Your donation, large or small, makes a huge difference to the future of the festival, and will help us generate more funds for long-term local initiatives in Greece. Any amount you can give – from £5 to £500 – shows your belief in the power of creative action to change the world.

Why Act & Why Athens

When the refugee crisis hit international headlines in 2015, ordinary people rushed to help those arriving on European shores, fleeing warzones in overcrowded boats. But there was only so much that they could do. In a world fractured by opposing economic interests, decision-makers in Paris, Berlin and London had limited empathy for those suffering on the ground. People whose families have been torn apart now live in perpetual limbo. People who have lost their homes and their sense of belonging, people who have been forgotten now that the cameras have turned their attention elsewhere.

Nowhere in Europe is this more true than in Athens. Here years of imposed austerity and political failings have disillusioned the youth, who still continue to prove their immense resilience and compassion. Despite their own troubles, many of them support a growing refugee community through cultural activism, political work and volunteering.

This is why we have started working on the ground in Athens to create a Yellow Days festival that builds solidarity between all – no matter who you are, or what you have gone through. The 2017 edition of Yellow Days proved the power of our concept. We believe that by moving our efforts to the Greek capital, we can help people living there to experience a sense of belonging and regenerative strength.

Each  event is a smaller representation of the actual festival, and all funds go into the Yellow Days Festival 2019 – but they aren’t enough alone.

We’re determined to reach more people, and to keep building a regenerative community of passionate and compassionate change-makers. If you believe in the power of creative action to change the world, if you believe that art can heal, if you believe that all humans are valuable and deserve love, then you are already part of the Yellow family.

Any amount you can give will help to grow the impact of Yellow Days 2019.

Thank you for being part of it.

About The Yellow Days Collective

Our grassroots movement was inspired by a volunteer experience at Pikpa Refugee Camp in Leros, Greece. There, our founder members saw that humanitarian work should go beyond the first wave of necessities. Using our skills, passions and experiences, we created a movement that focuses on connecting humans through our commonalities. We provide a celebratory safe-space for cultural exchange, learning and growing together. As a group of young artists and change-makers, each of our 100% inclusive events aim to create a lasting positive impact in our continent within the refugee and environmental crises.
