Internship to Italy

My name is Samantha Bonavita. I am a 19 year old pre-med student who is looking to specialize in pediatric surgery. I have decided to pursue medicine as a carrer because I want to be a part in solving some of the world's largest issues. For example, cancer and AIDS are two very common diseases that still have yet to be cured. It brings me such sadness to think about the numerous amounts of individuals who have suffered immensely as a result of these diseases. I have had many family members who I have seen struggle with uncurbable diseases such as cancer, pulmonary fibrosis, etc. Watching my family struggle made me decide overtime that I want to make a difference.  I want to help cure other's diseases, whether it be as major as cancer or a minor complication such as strep throat. My grandmother also played a large role in my fascination with the medical field because she was a psychiatric nurse. Once I decided to go into medicine, I realized I had to choose a specialty; and I decided to go with pediatric surgery. What drew me to this specialty is that I would be working on all aspects of the body and not just limited to one organ system. I have also always loved working with and helping children so putting those two ideas together made me realize pediatric surgery is the perfect carrer for me.

My purpose for making this GoFundMe is I received a once in a lifetime chance to intern in Genoa, Italy for three weeks, shadowing pediatric surgeons this summer. I need assistance in paying the hefty fees for travel, housing, etc.  As a college student, money is something that I am very limited on. The money from my job will not be enough to cover the payment. So without the fundraising from this GoFundMe, I will not have the ability to go.

This internship would give me so many  opportunities that I could never experience otherwise. I will be able to see diseases that I may never see in the United States. I understand that there are plenty of illnesses that only form in certain places in the world, so getting a chance to witness these possible diseases would bring me great experience for later down the line. A bonus to this is that seeing diseases from another country may educate me on parts of healthcare that my future colleagues may not know of. Therefore, I could possibly solve cases that I could not otherwise. Further reasoning that this internship would be beneficial, is this is an opportunity that not many people can say they have experienced, so it will help me stand out on medical school applications later on. It is no secret that everyone wants to stand out on their applications, but it is a struggle to find the perfect way to do so. Studying aboard is one very common extracurricular activity that pre-med students do, but I do not know anyone else who has shadowed abroad, so this is an opportunity like no other. In addition to this, shadowing in a hospital will give me an idea of the work life a hospital entails before starting clinical rotations. People constantly say how hard it is to acclimate to clinical rotations because they have not experienced hospital life before, so shadowing will definitely give me that experience I desire. Overall, getting to do this internship would be an amazing opportunity that I hope I can attend.
