Yasmine Arrington, ScholarCHIPS

Growing up, Yasmine Arrington’s father was always in and out of prison. When she was 13, her mother passed away, and she was raised by her grandmother. While planning for college, Yasmine and her grandmother realized that there weren’t scholarships in her region dedicated to children of incarcerated parents. So, in 2010, as a high school junior, Yasmine started ScholarCHIPS, a nonprofit that provides college scholarships and a support network to high school graduates who have incarcerated parents. The organization has empowered more than 80 scholars as they earn their college degrees, awarding more than $450,000 in scholarships and other aid.
