Cancer is one of the leading causes of death in the world.
Cancer affects everyone; the young and old, rich and poor, men, women and children. It represents a tremendous burden on patients, families and societies.
1 in 6 people, globally, die from cancer and no-one knows where or when it will strike next.
Race For Life UK
Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life is a series of events raising money for research into all 200 types of cancer.
Over the past 26 years, more than 8 million people have taken part in Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life, raising over £860 million to fund the charity’s life-saving work.
Race For Life in the UK is partnered by Tesco, one of the country’s largest supermarkets.
Cancer in Turkey
Turkey has a population of 78.6 million citizens and very year 0.23% of the total population people will be diagnosed with cancer.
Between 400-500 of those people will live in Fethiye - these people may feel fit and healthy today but will have been diagnosed with one of the 200 types of cancer by this time next year.
In Fethiye we only have one Oncology department at the Fethiye Devlet (State) Hospital. This department offers a limited range of service to a community of more that 140,000 people.
The money raised in the 2015, 2016 and 2017 Yaşam İçin Yarış events provided equipment for the Devlet Oncology department.
In 2015 the money raised was used to buy an Endoscope - A medical instrument used for visual examination of the interior of a body cavity or a hollow organ such as the colon, bladder, or stomach.
In 2016 the money raised was used to buy a Bronchoscope - A thin, flexible instrument with a lighted viewing tube that is used to visualise the air passages to the lungs.
In 2017 the money raised was used to refit the chemotherapy ward with new chairs, side tables and a fridge. A machine for cleaning the endoscpe was also purchased.
2018 was the biggest event yet and raised just under £17,000 (124,500 TL), which is being used to help cancer sufferers in Fethiye receive life saving treatment.
This year, Yaşam İçin Yarış will take place on Sunday 13 October. We will again raise money to continue to support the treatment of cancer.
