Accepted to a multiple Month Residency in Blanca, Spain for the summer of 2018 AADK: http://aadk.es/en/
I need funding to cover travel, food, art supplies, book editing, printing and marketing for book release event. If I exceed my grant amount, the additional funding would go to print additional books.
While at residency, I plan to complete a 3 book series and a painting series:
Book 1. Autobiography, 'I Am Your Statistic - 50 Stories to change your life, the Autobiography of African American, Visual Artist Carol Rashawnna Williams'
Book 2. Coffee Table Catalog of Artwork by Visual African American Artist Carol Rashawnna Williams'
Book 3. Affirmation Tool Kit, For Communities Shifting Toward Inclusive Community Change Models
Residency Proposal to AADK, Spain:
As an African American female, I wake up to an administration bent on erasing my people, my culture, my identity and then go to bed wondering when this nightmare will be over. I advocate for climate justice, yet feel current priorities of my country seem misaligned (most in office don't even believe the world is in the midst of environmental devastation.) Since the election, I have had more micro-aggressions directed at me, than in the past 10 years combined.
African Americans are currently being targeted by an institutional system that is eating us up, without spitting us out alive. From the school to prison pipeline, to the disappearance of social service safety net, to food deserts and gmo addictions, lack of community resources, jobs and empathy, and now across our entire nation we are being silently displaced, gentrified along with our legacies, history and identity.
This concept of being erased is very intriguing to me because, it parallels the same belief of nature, that it too is being erased. I have come to believe that this current system lacks ethics, morality and plain common sense. The African American challenge is a micro-cosim of the state of the world.
I have worked my entire life (now 47 years old), since I was 15 years old, and had kids at 19...I have painted since I was 5 years old and have been an artist for longer than I can remember not being an artist. In the 5th grade I won first place prize in the city-wide elementary school art competition for a painting I did of the Puget sound region. At the time I did not consider myself an artist, it never even entered my mind that I had done something so remarkable, created something out of nothing. In the past 2 years my art career has completely taken off, yet I have never had a break, a moment to reflect on my work and why I am an artist, my life, the course it's taken, and the people and their stories that have had an affect on my life experience.
If given the opportunity I would use my time exploring my art form, my identity and what it means to be who I am. 65 million people have been displaced worldwide since world war 2. It is a strange feeling, because I do not feel like a refuge, but when I acknowledge what is currently occurring to African Americans nationally, that is the only word that comes to mind, an outsider except with an insider viewpoint.
The largest Syrian refuge camp has developed it's own economy. This is very interesting to me. This idea of rebuilt community, out of chaos, the relationships to people and the systems we create. I believe my unique perspective, marries ethnicity, art, class, environment, economic prosperity and the systems that govern us. I would like to experiment with topics such as echo art, the environment, race, climate and economic justice and the creation of new systems. I would love to incorporate into my process, collaborations with the local community.
Out of this exploration I would like to create both a written and visual body of work that can then be shared with the world, especially those who have found themselves lost or trying to lesson the burden of one who is.
As an African American Female Visual Painter, there are few books about us, by us and for us, practically none, and coming from the Pacific Northwest, even fewer. There is like, 1 book about African American artists for every 1 thousand books about artists of European descent (and it's even fewer when searching for books about African American 'female' painters.) I am a survivor of so much, and have come out the other side alive. I'd like to explore how my story, has been influenced by so many individuals, their circumstances, and their having just accomplished being born.
I Am Your Statistic: 50 stories to change your life is a compilation of 10 chapters with 5 stories in each chapter. Each chapter with artwork that was created during the periods I reference, starting from birth up to now. The book launch will be May 31, 2019.
