Afghans Who Supported US Troops Still in Peril

KABUL, Afghanistan – Imagine being a young boy in a country that has never known peace. As you’ve grown older, you’ve watched your Father work for the US military for your entire life in hopes that it would lead to peace. By the time you’re 18, you’ve laid to rest 5 of your uncles because they too had worked with the US military and were killed for doing so.

This is the life of 21-year-old “Abraham”, whose name we’ve changed to protect his identity from the Taliban. Abraham has been on the run throughout much of Afghanistan since the United States pulled its troops out of Kabul in August of last year. The same month that he buried his Father, who was killed in a shootout with the Taliban, protecting his wives and children, including Abraham.

Abraham’s Father, “Isaac” was an engineer in northern Afghanistan where he daily assisted US military troops in working on agri-business related projects as well as ensuring their safety, at a time where the district that he lived in was once 100% controlled by the Taliban. “I’m not sure we could tell you the number of time’s that “Isaac”, or his Family, to include “Abraham”, saved us from being ambushed or hitting IED’s.” said Command Sergeant Major (Retired) Jim Crosby who was deployed to Afghanistan in 2009 – 2010 and worked with “Isaac” on numerous projects..

Crosby, who is part of a small group working to get former interpreters, or those who worked side-by-side with the US military in Afghanistan, out of harm’s way, says that 5 of the 6 interpreters that supported his unit in Afghanistan are currently living, working, and thriving, to include the last one that was on one of the last planes out of Afghanistan on August 30th, 2022. From there he, his wife, brother and 2 small children made their way to Kansas where he was recently hired by a major airline company.

“It’s our goal to help everyone who helped us.” Crosby said. “It’s the least we can do for everything that they did for us. They allowed us to come home to our loved ones and we feel obligated to every single one of them.” Of course, this takes effort, time and, most importantly, money. Crosby and his group have recently set up a GoFundMe account to assist Abraham in obtaining a visa to get to Pakistan in hopes of getting to Brazil and, eventually, the United States.
