Fourteen year old Alexandra Raucher is in critical condition, diagnosed with a rare autoimmune disorder. Wegener’s Granulomatosis rarely affects adolescents, but it is wreaking havoc on Alex’s lungs and kidneys. She is in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at Columbian Presbyterian Hospital unable to breathe on her own and on dialysis.

Her mother, Elaine, writes:

I’ve been trying to write this all day. We had a major setback with Alex this week. Her lungs were so full of inflammation that her heart was pumping so very hard to fill them with oxygen. My 14 year old girl had a heart attack Wednesday night in the PICU. The doctors rushed her to the adult cardio unit and put her on a heart/lung machine called an ECMO. Thursday she was transferred to Columbia Presbyterian Childrens Hospital in NYC, one of the top 20 children’s hospitals in the country. They are taking good care of her. She’s now off the heart support, but still on lung support and 4 other machines that I can count. They started 2 biologics today to reduce the lung inflammation and her lungs and kidneys are resting until she can handle them on her own. She’s heavily sedated on Fentanyl and can’t feel a thing.

And so we wait.

This is going to be a long road and Ben and I are taking it one hour, one day at a time. But every hour and every day she gains an inch and then a yard. She’s a tough cookie with an iron will.

I’m not answering texts, posts or phone calls. I’m reading every one, but can’t bring myself to talk about how we got here or what the plan is. The plan changes hourly as the doctors move around the chess pieces that hold my daughter’s life. I’m meeting with doctors, listening to rounds, researching information and keeping myself sane. I’m staying here in the PICU, not leaving her side. I appreciate all your messages of love and faith and concern, but I need to stay focused to do my best for my Alex. I can barely breathe.

So, I ask of you, my family, my friends, my village, this weekend when you go to Church, please say a prayer and light a candle for my baby. Alex’s full name is Alexandra Cristine. This weekend when you go to Temple for the High Holy days, please ask God for healing prayers for my baby. Her Hebrew name is Abarrane Chaviva, daughter of Malcah Sara and Benjamin Lev. This weekend when you look to the sky or to nature’s beauty, please send healing thoughts or prayers for my baby. That is what I need.

I will update you all again when I can.

With all my love - Elaine

While parents Elaine and Ben keep vigil as Alex fights to recover, they also worry about the mounting expenses of her medical care and long road to recovery.
Uncle Bruce Belfer (  [email redacted]  ),  Aunt Julie Silver ( [email redacted]) and I ( [email redacted] ) have set up this page to assist the family.

We thank you for your love and support of the Raucher Family during this most difficult time.
