This is my husband Douglas Scott – better known as “Scotty.”  He is being treated for Hep C, cirrhosis and liver cancer at the Veterans Hospital (VA) in Richmond and in Hampton.

Scotty had an ultrasound performed in Hampton last year and the technician only checked part of his liver.  During his next ultrasound in Richmond they found a spot on the right lobe and a spot on the left lobe. Initially they thought one spot was cancer and one was scar tissue.

They performed an ablation procedure on his right lobe and a biopsy on his left lobe. The biopsy came back negative.  About a month and a half later the Richmond VA performed an MRI to see how the ablation procedure went.  The cancer in the right lobe was gone but the spot on his left lobe had grown.  The results of another biopsy came back negative.  We thought everything was OK J.

At a follow up appointment, the spot on his left lobe had grown significantly. The doctors said that the mass in his left lobe was a fast growing cancer and he needed to have a TACE treatment performed to slow the growth.

Scotty had the TACE treatment done at the VA in Richmond.  Three days after he came home I had to call 911 at 1:30 am.  I thought Scotty had a stroke.  He got up and fell back on the bed.  He couldn’t talk without slurring. During his 4 day stay at the hospital he went through a lot of tests. Scotty did not have a stroke.  The TACE treatment impaired his liver function and sent his ammonia levels very high which started affecting his brain.  The doctors from Sentara started Scotty on Lactulose to bring the ammonia levels down.

Scotty has been diagnosed with terminal Hepatocellular Carcinoma and Hepatic Encephalopathy (HE).  He only has around 6 months to live. With Hepatic Encephalopathy you lose control of your muscles, your speech is slurred and you get confused. He can no longer drive. After the diagnosis Scotty began in home hospice care.

I took Scotty for a second opinion that confirmed the diagnosis.  We asked about a liver transplant at the VA and Sentara but were told he is not a candidate.  We are going to see another doctor who worked on liver transplants at VCU.  Keep your fingers crossed and say lots of prayers that a liver transplant is possible for Scotty and he can be saved!

This has been a very difficult journey and it’s not over yet.  Things have always been tight but now….well you can imagine.  Finances are the last thing Scotty needs to worry about now.  Thank you for your thoughts and prayers, we deeply appreciate any help during this difficult time.
