My mother Sherry was diagnosed with Breast Cancer on August 21st of 2017. She lost her sister to Breast Cancer six months earlier (almost to the day, February 28th 2017). Exactly a year earlier on February 28th 2016, we lost my grandmother, Sherry’s mother. The recent losses have made our family’s stress levels skyrocket.
My parents were missionaries in Tainan, Taiwan for 24 years. I was born there. We returned to the states only ten years ago to be caregivers for my mother's parents.
The reason my friends and I are opening this Gofundme is because of the outrageous cost of treating the type of cancer she has. Insurance has helped but still leaves us with huge copays, deductibles, and out of pocket costs every single month. To be specific, she is grade 3 HER2+. This is an extremely aggressive type of cancer. Only 20 percent of women get this type of cancer. One of the treatments she needs is called Herceptin. This treatment costs over$20,000 a month. She will need to be treated till the end of 2018 with this infusion. This is the only way she can have a 98 percent survival rate. Another is Taxol which is $1500 per week. She will continue to be treated for the cancer being hormone positive for the next 5-10 years. We do not even know the cost of that yet. This does not include surgeries she's already had and the 30 treatments of radiation to come. Her first surgery was in September 2017. Since then, bills have been flooding in.
My mother is 65 and has been a caregiver for 10 years to her mother until her death. My father is also 65. He has been working 50+ hours a week at two jobs to try and handle the overwhelming debt that has been building. We try to live simply and modestly but this has still caused us an immense amount of stress and we need help. We would like some organizations to help out. Spreading the word would help a lot!
With all of this that has built up over the past year, the amount of stress, sadness, and anxiety is not easy to express. But I hope I helped you understand our situation.
