Fermiamo la devastazione della natura in Appennino centrale. Ci serve il vostro aiuto per affrontare le spese legali in difesa dell’orso e del suo habitat anche in tribunale!
Salviamo l’Orso ONLUS - associazione per la conservazione dell’orso bruno marsicano - opera in Appennino centrale (in Abruzzo, Lazio, Molise, Umbria e Marche) per garantire un futuro alla residua popolazione di orso bruno marsicano ridotta a circa 60 esemplari e ancora a rischio concreto di estinzione.
Chi ci conosce (www.salviamolorso.it) sa che siamo impegnati ormai da 9 anni in una serie di azioni concrete per favorire la convivenza tra orso e comunità rurali nei borghi appenninici. Famose sono le “Bear Smart Communities” (Comunità a Misura d’Orso) che abbiamo creato in alcuni comuni dell’Alto Gizio, della Valle Roveto e dell’Alto Molise. Queste attività sono finanziate con le donazioni dei nostri soci e di alcune fondazioni estere. Consistono nella prevenzione dei danni da orso (installazione gratuita di recinti elettrificati e di porte e pollai a prova d’orso), nella diffusione della corretta gestione dei rifiuti organici e nella comunicazione per la convivenza uomo-orso rivolta agli abitanti di questi territori.
Queste attività, seppur fondamentali per ridurre le interazioni negative ed evitare che gli orsi cadano vittime di rappresaglie indiscriminate (quali uccisioni con il veleno, con i lacci, a colpi di arma da fuoco), non sono sufficienti a garantire un futuro migliore per la specie. Altre cause la minacciano gravemente, prima tra tutte il consumo del territorio attraverso la distruzione del suo habitat, dovuto in primis allo sviluppo sconsiderato dei bacini sciistici in Appennino, che alcune Regioni portano avanti ormai da qualche anno (da Passo Lanciano a Gamberale, da Ovindoli-Magnola al Gran Sasso, da Campitello Matese a Roccaraso, dal Terminillo al Monte Catria), e di nuove infrastrutture stradali che creerebbero ulteriore frammentazione.
Contro questi tentativi di cancellare gli ultimi angoli di natura selvaggia dell’Appennino, Salviamo l’Orso ha incaricato un team di 3 avvocati per contrastare sul piano legale, a colpi di ricorsi al TAR e al Consiglio di Stato, questi progetti insostenibili e devastanti per l’orso marsicano e le nostre montagne. I costi amministrativi e dei nostri legali sono stati fino ad oggi coperti grazie ai nostri soci. Tuttavia, il moltiplicarsi degli impegni su un vasto territorio e il parallelo aumento delle cause che stiamo intentando, tra cui quella vittoriosa sulle responsabilità oggettive dell’uomo che nel 2014 uccise un orso a colpi di fucile a Pettorano sul Gizio (AQ), ci costringerebbero a scegliere quale delle due battaglie che stiamo combattendo dobbiamo limitare o addirittura abbandonare.
Noi non vogliamo rinunciare a nessuna delle due! Infatti, mentre continuiamo a finanziare le attività di prevenzione dei conflitti in cui siamo impegnati ormai da fine Marzo e che hanno carattere di urgenza, abbiamo bisogno del vostro aiuto per continuare a contrastare nei tribunali l’attacco alle nostre montagne!

Let’s stop the destruction of nature in the central Apennines. We need your support to cover legal expenses incurred in the defense of bears and their habitat in court!
Salviamo l’Orso ONLUS - the association for the conservation of marsican brown bears - operates in the central Apennines (in the regions of Abruzzo, Lazio, Molise, Umbria and Marche) in order to secure a future for the remaining population of marsican brown bears, counting approximately 60 individuals; the marsican brown bear is still at risk of becoming extinct.
We are Salviamo l’Orso (https://www.salviamolorso.it/en/): you may already be aware of the fact that, for the last nine years, we have been actively promoting coexistence between bears and rural communities, offering concrete solutions to the people living in the towns and villages of the Apennines. We developed the well-known Bear Smart Communities in different towns of the Alto Gizio area, the Roveto Valley and Alto Molise. These initiatives are funded by donations emanating from our members as well as international foundations. Preventing bear damages by installing electric fences, bear-proof gates and chicken coops - free of charge, spreading best practices for the management of food waste, information about human-bear coexistence practices to the people living in these regions: these are some of our concrete actions.
These initiatives are crucial in reducing negative interactions and avoiding retaliation (like the killings of bears with poison, snares, or shooting), however, they are not sufficient to secure a better future for the species.
There are other serious threats. First of all, territories are being used and fragmented, while natural habitats are being destroyed. For some years several Regions have been supporting the development of ski resorts in the Apennine mountains - e.g. the ski resorts of Passo Lanciano and of Gamberale, of Ovindoli-Magnola and of Mount Gran Sasso, those of Campitello Matese in Roccaraso, of Mount Terminillo and of Monte Catria. This together with the development of new road infrastructure would create further fragmentation of the natural habitats.
Salviamo l’Orso has employed a team of three lawyers aiming to stop these initiatives. By carrying out legal actions at both regional and state level, we intend to stop the development of these projects which are clearly both unsustainable and detrimental to our mountains. In effect, these would erase the last natural and wild territories of the Apennines, and therefore the habitat of the marsican brown bear.
So far, administrative costs and lawyers’ fees have been covered thanks to the contributions of our members. Let us remember the successful lawsuit which recognised the objective responsibility of the man who, in 2014, shot and killed a bear with a rifle in Pettorano sul Gizio, AQ). But now, not only is there more work in the field, considering the vast territory we operate in, but there is also more work in court, with an increase in the number of lawsuits. As a consequence, we may lack the resources to engage effectively in both of these battles. Should we be reduced to abandon one or the other?
We do not want to give up any of our battles! While we continue to fund urgent actions for the prevention of conflicts that we have been carrying out in the field since March, we need your help to continue to fight against the destruction of our mountains in court!
