My Volunteer Trip

Donation protected
There are two things in this world that I'm passionate about. One is to see children around the world given every opportunity to succeed in life and develop their skills for a happy and fulfilling future. Not every child has been as fortunate as me. Also my interest in the natural environment, especially the wildlife of this planet who are so often at the mercy of human development encroaching on their resources and potentially threatening their wellbeing. When I saw my opportunity to help with both the education of children really in need of every support they can get, plus the chance to change the lives of one of the threatened species of the world, elephants... well, I just had to jump at it!

This is why I'm volunteering with VESABROAD in Laos, Southeast Asia. I'll be staying at the Nam Tien Protected Area at the ‘Elephant Conservation Centre’. The aim of the other volunteers and myself is to give the chance for a life in the wild to formerly domesticated elephants and to one day see them following their natural behaviours after safely releasing them into freedom.
Also I'll be working as part of a team in remote village schools, building classroom blocks and teaching English to young kids. To see the smiles on their faces when our work is complete and they learn something of our culture, whilst sharing theirs with us, will make a huge difference to how they see the world and its many opportunities.

To give the gift of a better life to these deserving people and animals, funds will be needed to go towards helping with all the tools and equipment needed for:

- Planting and harvesting banana and sugar cane
- The building and maintenance of the centre’s infrastructure (veterinary clinic, elephant nursery, viewing platforms…)
- Creating and setting up enrichment exercises, and
- Observing the elephants’ socialisation time

Teaching English will broaden the educational and employment horizons of the youngsters, incorporating basic hygiene, nutrition, recycling and waste management.  Providing an introduction to English is vital as it can mean escaping the poverty cycle and securing their future.
I'm appealing for your support by the beginning of November, 2018 as we leave at the start of January, 2019. Please help. I'll be ever so grateful, as will the elephants and youngsters who'll benefit.
