That's me. People describe me as a go-getter and a leader. My drive is fierce. I take every opportunity that comes my way. AND my passion is the Arts. I'm an actor, dancer, and singer. When I made it into AMDA (American Musical and Dramatic Academy), I knew it would be life changing. Not only for me but for my family. I am a first generation high school graduate and college student! There was nothing my parents wanted more than for me to follow my dreams. What I didn't realize is how circumstances beyond my control would come in my way.
Throughout high school my family had financial struggles. We barely scraped by when it came to meals and basic necessities. My dad, a disabled veteran, wasn't able to work. As I was getting ready for graduation, I found myself sleeping on my sister's couch. I didn't let this show. I didn't want to ask for help. I worked harder because of it.
Now I am living my dream. I just finished taking Improv 1, Beginning Scene Study, English Comp, Vocal Production and Speech, Stage Combat 1, Theater History and Acting 1 Techniques. And my grades are all A's and B's! I've only missed one class due to being sick. I'm committed and loving it!
However, when I went to go register for my second semester classes I was in for a shock. I couldn't register. There was a hold on my account. I owed a tuition deposit. My housing was put on hold. With messed up paperwork with the military (my dad had education benefits for me through his military time), lack of communication and no extra funds to help from home, I faced the reality of not going back. Desperately, I met with the financial aid department. It was through the Academic Department where I found support. My high grades could help me stay. But my financial situation was here to stay. An advisor told me, "Katera, withdraw now so you won't go in debt later on." And I say, "Hell no!" This is my passion. I've found my love. I deserve this. Why the heck would I give up now?
I know to continue, I must swallow my pride and ask for help (which I HATE to do). I'm currently looking for employment but I need a little lift to get my foot in the door. These funds will pay for tuition, housing, and school materials. If I get funds to pay the college now, my dad can work out a payment plan. AND I will get my second semester schedule.
Please consider investing in me and my future. "Let nothing dim the light that shines from within." I know I will shine.
