Our cousin, MaryKate Morrell, suffered a massive stroke in October 2017. She spent 5 weeks in intensive care following brain surgery at Strong Memorial Hospital. She also spent 6 weeks at Unity Hospital Golisano Rehabilitation Unit. Kate is currently at a long term care facility receiving hours of therapy each day. Her prognosis is fair at best as she may be paralyzed the rest of her life. But the hope is Kate’s verbal abilities and use of her hands will return. Regardless, her road to recovery will take years.
Prior to the stroke, Kate was the primary caregiver to her children Zachary (20), Grace (18) and Jayden (14) as well as served on the ARC Board of Directors. Zach and Grace were both born with a rare and severe debilitating disease about which very little is known requiring round the clock nursing care. Her devoted husband of 24 years Erik, works long hours to support his wife, two disabled children and thriving teenage son.
In order for Kate to come home, the second floor of their home will require renovations and significant equipment to accommodate her disabilities. The cost of these necessary expenses are estimated to be approximately twenty thousand dollars. Erik, family and friends will help complete the renovations to reduce costs.
This family has had more challenges than most people deal with in a lifetime. Erik has had to fight with hospitals as well as insurance medical directors from day one over Kate’s care while trying to balance going to work, visiting Kate as well as participating in her therapies and spending time with their children at home. You will never meet a more loving, vested husband and father.
