JUMP FOR JOY! (Quality math education in Nigeria)

Donation protected
We are raising funds to bring quality math education to children in the rural village of Ebe, Nigeria.

Eight years ago Ebe was an impoverished village where women and children walked 14 miles per day to fetch water. Quality education was a remote dream. Today, Ebe, now known as Joy Village, has come a long way and not only are children being educated but they are being prepared for secondary school and higher education. Rigorous math education is one of the vital components that will allow these children to access higher education and reach their full potential.

We are working with an incredible local humanitarian leader, Father Charles Ogada, to bring JUMP Math to their local school. This school (called The Embodiments of Love Academy, or TELA) is a completely free school serving the poorest villagers, and it serves over 1,000 children.  The school needs financial support in order to cover the costs of vital school supplies that are necessary to implement their math program. The funds raised through this campaign will go directly to the school (TELA) in Ebe, Nigeria, to cover the costs of these learning resources.

Please help us to make this crucial impact on the lives of the children of Joy Village.

THE BACKSTORY

Almost a decade ago, Father Charles Ogada was sent to work in Ebe, a rural village in southern Nigeria. The poverty he saw there affected him deeply. Thanks to his tireless work and the inspiration of people in Nigeria and around the world, Ebe now has running water, an orphanage, a hospital, and a school (TELA, The Embodiments of Love Academy) serving 1,060 children. Amazingly, all of these services are provided completely free of charge to the local residents!

Ebe is now known as Joy Village, and with the support of so many people in Nigeria and around the world, Joy Village is prospering. (To learn more about Joy Village, visit: www.joyvillages.org )

While the village has come a long way, there is still much need. In order for students to graduate beyond secondary school and become leaders in their lives and those of their families and communities, improved math education is of vital importance.

We recently had the privilege of supporting Joy Village by raising funds to ship JUMP Math Teaching and Student resources to Nigeria for use at TELA.  (JUMP Math is a non-profit, social enterprise based in Toronto. It develops evidence-based teacher-ready elementary math curricula and also provides professional development to educators and school leadership. Its mission is to replace math anxiety with rich learning opportunities, in-depth understanding and love of math in students and educators. To learn more about JUMP Math, visit: www.jumpmath.org )

We feel confident that JUMP Math is an ideal choice for Joy Village. We are as excited as Father Charles to see how JUMP Math will help improve the self-confidence, abilities and performance of students in mathematics and beyond.

THE COSTS

In order to ensure the best possible implementation of a rigorous math program, the school in Joy Village will require many supplies. Some supplies will last for years such as calculators, base ten blocks, protractors, and rulers; others are consumables, such as grid paper notebooks, pencils, and crayons. Some of these supplies will also be useful for other school subjects.

We have made a budget and broken down the funding requirement into levels:

$1,500 will meet the bare minimum needs
$3,000 will allow for a moderate level of implementation
$6,000 will allow for an ideal implementation

We are currently aiming for the moderate level of $3,000, but we would be thrilled to exceed that. We are hoping to collect all these funds by Friday, Dec. 21st, in time to offer this as a “Christmas gift” to the students in Joy Village. The math program could then commence with the necessary supplies when students return to classes in the new year.

Even small contributions will go far. For example, a donation of just $35 could provide the gift of a “math kit” for 10 children.
