Xodo Santos Relief Fund

Born in June of 1954, Joao "Xodo" Santos has been training Capoeira for over thirty years and teaching Capoeira for over twenty years.  He has been, and continues to be, an extremely positive force in the lives of his friends, family and community members.

At the end of 2010, Xodo had surgery and spent ten months recuperating from a massive, open wound on his right leg.  The following year, Xodo spent six months- including three weeks in intensive care- hospitalized for a rare condition in which he had to have his esophagus removed.

Despite his unprecedented and intensive medical history, Xodo remains heart-warmingly optimistic and thanks God everyday for his life.  Thanks be to God that during these last six years Xodo has maintained his health and has been teaching Capoeira, until recently...

In mid November of 2017, Xodo began to feel pain in his shins, and the following week another wound opened up on his left shin.  The wound is extremely painful, and keeps Xodo from working and teaching Capoeira.  Luckily, Xodo's doctors believe his current wound will not take as long to heal as the one in 2010.  Regardless, Xodo has been unable to work (or do much of anything else) since this second wound opened up.

There's no finite cure for Xodo's wound because doctors aren't sure what's causing it.  Specialists believe Xodo may have some form of hereditary condition, but no tests have confirmed this.  In the meantime, Xodo's treatment consists of basic wound care and waiting to see whether or not the wound will stop spreading on its own.  We've been advised the whole process will take at least three to four months, if not longer.

Needless to say, three to four months is a long time to be out of work, especially for those of us who live paycheck to paycheck AND have to pay unexpected medical bills.  That's why we're asking you for your support in helping Xodo get through this difficult time.  Starting in January of 2018, Xodo will need financial support covering his monthly expenses (rent and utilities) and some of his medical bills (Xodo has weekly doctors' visits to monitor the growth of the wound and avoid blood infections). Without the help of caring individuals, Xodo will lose his housing by March 2018, and he will be unable to receive the medical care he desperatetly needs.
