Ghana Mission Trip

Outside of major cities such as Accra, the standard of healthcare drops significantly and there is a critical shortage of trained medical professionals to work in these communities and provide basic healthcare services.  The residents of this locale may not see medical providers for months at a time and the addition of our team will provide much needed medical care to the people of the area.
During this mission, I will volunteer at the Narh-Bita hospital in Tema, Ghana along with a team of other Howard University Medical students as members of the International Medical Interest Group (IMIG). The Narh-Bita hospital serves as a teaching hospital for medical students, nursing students and physician assistants and is an integral part of the community. I will rotate through various departments and assist local doctors in taking histories and performing physical exams. I will also have the opportunity to observe multiple surgical procedures performed at the hospital while also gaining an invaluable perspective on the local healthcare system.
The money raised through GoFundMe will go towards paying for my flights ($1700), housing at the Kaylen Hotel for 21 nights ($1045), meals for 21 days ($300), vaccinations for endemic diseases ($550), passport (145),  and a visa ($60). Originally, IMIG anticipated receiving funds from student support services at Howard University, our home institution. However, unforeseen issues out of our control have made this no longer possible.
The opportunity to serve the underserved and gain the experience to care for patients who rarely so often are seen by medical professionals means the world to me. I decided to dedicate my life to medicine for this very reason and to be able to make an impact on the lives of people who desperately need care means the world to me.
